Treatment of fencers with or without initial ranking

1. Treatment of frencers with no initial ranking

The XML file description document indicates that the field providing the initial ranking should be omitted for fencers without an initial ranking.

Historically, this field was 999 in the distant past and 9999 more recently. Both values can still be found in XML files supplied to competition organizers.

When you have a combination of these 3 possibilities, it's important to be able to reduce them to a single one, so that certain shooters aren't disadvantaged. But you can't do this automatically, because you may have, for example, a shooter with a true rank of 999 who has to go before the unranked shooters.

1.1. Processing in the fencers and teams tab

The "Edit" button on the Individual fencers tab and the Team tab gives access to a menu item entitled "Verification of series numbers for initial ranking". When there is a combination of the 3 possibilities, a panel shows the situation, for example :

Assuming that 999 is a true rank but 9999 means "no rank", the user chooses

"yes" and obtains :

Here, he replaces 999 with 9999 since he wants to keep the 999 and obtains :

He confirms and a "pass no 2" is presented to him with :

Since that's what he wants, he chooses "No, it's okay".

1.2. Treatment when establishing the initial ranking for the first round of poules or the first table if there are no poules

When the competition is launched, if an ambiguous situation remains, the dialog shown above is restarted. In this way, processing is carried out even if the user has not done so before.

2. Treatment of tied fencers in the initial ranking

There may be ties in the initial ranking provided in the XML file, not just in the unranked. A draw for ties is carried out by Engarde in accordance with FIE regulations. Until now, this draw was integrated into the constitution of the first poule round (or first tableaux) and the result was not displayed. Now, to better comply with FIE rules, it is carried out before the constitution and is displayed by Engarde and DiapoEngarde in the document :

  • For poules: "Original ranking" accessible via the "Document" button and the choice of" Classification

  • For tableaux, it's the same thing.

The "Competition| Check Initial Ranking" menu is used to check that the initial ranking is correct. Please note that once the competition has started, you must no longer modify the series. In fact, there's no point because the initial ranking is done, but if you do it and ask to check that initial ranking, Engarde will say it's no good (but that won't stop Engarde from operate normally).

The old method, with a draw integrated into the constitution of the first round of poules (or the first table), remains accessible via the "Course" button and the "Pool creation (old method)" choice.

In the "Fencers" and "Teams" panels, the "Fencers' list" and "Teams' list" documents are displayed.

teams" contain an "initial rank" field (abbreviated to "r.i.") which displays the value of the initial rank when the competition is started. It is possible to request a list in "rank" order. initial" field. On engarde-service, the list of shooters contains the "initial rank" field.

When the formula includes progressive entries, the old method is applied.

3. Treatment of non-combativeness

Since 2019, non-combativity has been the subject of P cards (yellow, red and black), which can be entered in Engarde.

The "black card P" is now the subject of an additional treatment in Engarde: "defeat for black card P".

When a fencer receives a "black card P", or a team receives two "black cards P", it loses the match. This loss of match is now entered in the same way as withdrawals in the

match :

That's a defeat, but not a truly exceptional exit. Indeed, if there are repechage or ranking matches, the competitor who lost for "black card P" takes part.

To determine the fencer to whom a "black card P" is awarded when the scores of the two shooters are equal, the initial rank of the fencers in the competition is indicated on the match sheet.

4. Semi-final defeats tied or not

For a long time now, in individual competitions, those beaten in the semi-finals are ranked tied for third. When there is an exclusion during the final, Engarde retains this and the beaten semi-finalists are ranked second ex-aequo. This has now been changed, with the possibility of choice.

The "default" treatment (i.e. when the user does not make a specific request) is as follows (if the formula does not include a match for third place):

  • If the two finalists are ranked, the semi-final losers are ranked third ex-aequo.

  • Otherwise, they are not tied (if there are one or two exclusions in the final).

When the competition is over, if the formula does not include a match for third place, this can be changed using the "Competition" menu:

If the user clicks on one of the three possibilities, the ranking is recalculated by applying their choice.
